Rayman Creator Discusses The Rayman 'Remake' Ubisoft Has Yet to Announce

Michel Ancel, the original creator of Rayman, discusses the potential features of an unannounced remake of the classic platformer.

New information regarding an unannounced remake of Rayman has emerged, courtesy of the game's creator, Michel Ancel. In a recent interview with RetroGamer, Ancel shed light on the secretive project, indicating that it will not simply be a remaster with enhanced visuals. Instead, he refers to it as a "remake" that aims to improve aspects of the original game, such as the addition of extra checkpoints to alleviate some of the frustration players may have experienced. "I believe Rayman remains an enjoyable game with plenty of content," Ancel remarked in the interview, which was highlighted by the fan account Rayman Merchandise. He noted that while the pacing may feel slow due to the game's larger character, the pixel-perfect gameplay can be challenging. Ancel emphasized that despite its complexities, the limitations of the past lend a unique charm that feels fresh even today. "I think there's a remake in the works that addresses these points." Ancel's comments are particularly noteworthy since Ubisoft has yet to officially announce the project. However, this aligns with earlier reports suggesting that Ubisoft is gearing up to celebrate Rayman's 30th anniversary, which includes hints about the series' future. Last September, the dormant official Rayman social media account was reactivated to share updates about the franchise. "Rayman turns 30! Join us on our official channels to celebrate an incredible legacy," the account proclaimed, accompanied by a short video. In that video, Loic Gounon, a brand producer for Rayman since 2006, mentioned that a talented team from Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan is currently collaborating on the future of the beloved character. In October 2024, Ubisoft confirmed that a new Rayman project was in the "exploration phase" at its Montpellier and Milan studios, following reports that Ancel had been approached for consultation. At the beginning of this year, Ubisoft announced significant restructuring within the company, leading to the cancellation of six games, including the much-anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, along with delays for seven other titles. Among the canceled projects, only one was publicly acknowledged, while three were new intellectual properties and one was a mobile title. Specifics regarding the delayed games remain unclear, but one of them is widely speculated to be an Assassin's Creed: Black Flag remaster, now expected to release before March 31, 2027. As Ubisoft shifts its focus toward open-world and live-service games, it remains uncertain how a potential Rayman remake will fit into their future plans. In late 2024, Ubisoft also discreetly launched an NFT game featuring Rayman, titled Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E., which was not heavily promoted, likely due to its nature as a Web 3 game involving cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. This top-down multiplayer shooter, available on PC, included various Ubisoft characters, including Rayman.
