Dispatch Developers Reveal How Aaron Paul's Performance Changed the Game
Creative Director Nick Herman and AdHoc's CEO Michael Choung explain how the Breaking Bad star influenced the development of their acclaimed game.
Creating a successful video game involves numerous factors coming together harmoniously. Michael Choung, the CEO of AdHoc Studio, which developed the popular superhero workplace comedy game Dispatch, acknowledges the complexity of this process. He points out that there were likely around 20 pivotal decisions over the past seven years that contributed to the game's remarkable success. Among these decisions was the casting of Aaron Paul as the lead character, Robert Robertson/Mecha Man. In an exclusive conversation with Choung and Nick Herman, the Creative Director and Executive Producer of Dispatch, we explored the elements that led to the game's successful release, especially as it garnered six nominations, including Game of the Year, for the upcoming DICE Awards on February 12. Herman noted that although the team had decent temporary voice tracks from stand-in actors prior to Paul’s arrival, his performance significantly shifted the game's development trajectory. "When we brought Aaron Paul into the recording studio, he infused the character with a deeper gravitas," Herman explained. "His portrayal added a weightiness, allowing us to explore more serious themes. The burden he conveyed through his performance made us realize that this depth was essential for the game's narrative." Aaron Paul, widely recognized for his Emmy-winning role as Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, is also nominated for a DICE Award for Outstanding Achievement in Character, sharing this honor with Herman and the other directors involved in the game's narrative. Laura Bailey, who voices Courtney/Invisigal, is nominated for the same award, showcasing the strong talent within the cast, which also features notable actors like Jeffrey Wright, Matthew Mercer, and Ashley Johnson. Herman emphasized the importance of assembling an exceptional cast, stating, "We aimed to include recognizable names that would resonate with audiences. Aaron’s interest in the script was a stroke of luck for us. Having established talent is crucial, especially when presenting to investors who have substantial influence." Choung added, "While some might expect a calculated strategy behind casting decisions, we simply wanted voices that resonated creatively. The additional advantages include their existing fanbases and the relationships we had built over years of collaboration." With Dispatch achieving both critical acclaim and commercial success, Herman and Choung are taking a moment to reflect on the audience's enthusiastic reception. When asked what aspect of the game they are most proud of, Choung remarked, "Regardless of personal opinion, the tone is distinctive, resulting from numerous carefully made choices. I’m proud that we remained true to our vision, even if it strayed from conventional paths." Herman added, "We pursued bold ideas that some deemed too risky. Critics claimed there was no financial viability in narrative-driven experiences. Our decision to eliminate free exploration and concentrate on a core mechanic was something we had long wanted to experiment with. We treated Dispatch as if it were our last opportunity to create something together, and that mindset fueled our success." He continued, "The positive response from players has been incredible. I hope others can take inspiration from our journey. Embrace creativity and go all out if possible. I take pride in how bold we were and how we took significant risks. Whether it’s an indie project or a major studio title, the fact that a game gets made is always a remarkable achievement." Mark your calendars for the live broadcast of the 29th Annual DICE Awards on February 12 at 8 PM PT.
